CATALOGUE HIGHLIGHTS –
A COMMON PURPOSE - a rarely-seen but remarkable film which won the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the Sydney Film Festival a few years back. It's a riveting legal documentary by one of Australia's leading filmmakers, Mitzi Goldman.
The film documents a notorious murder trial that marked South Africa's transition from apartheid to democracy. In the late 1980s, during the most violent period of the apartheid regime, twenty-five men and women were rounded up in a black township in South Africa, to stand trial for the murder of a black policeman. Of the twenty-five, fourteen were sentenced to hang, one lawyer was assassinated and another, a white lawyer, Andrea Durbach, was forced into exile.
Durbach became a Sydney resident in 1989, and was Director of the Australian Human Rights Centre in the University of NSW's Faculty of Law from 2004 to 2017. The film is structured around her return to South Africa and her reunion with her clients and their families eighteen years after the landmark trial.
